Vogueworthy? #OhComeOn

VOGUE APRIL 2014 COVER

I have to chime in on the April 2014 issue of Vogue. As you probably already know, two days ago it was revealed that Kim Kardashian ThomasHumphries and Kanye West are on the cover. Sigh. I just don’t get it anymore. At this point what does it mean to be “In Vogue”? I always thought that Vogue is supposed to be the most revered fashion magazine and cover you can land, and reserved for the most chic, successful, brilliant, and stylish people (mostly women) that are culturally relevant and represent the highest standard of their profession.

I don’t feel this is necessarily a critique against Kim Kardashian ThomasHumphries, as she laughs all the way to the bank everyday, but more against Vogue and what everyone thought it supposedly stood for. Even if Kim Kardashian ThomasHumphries West (KKTHW)* has access to the fashion high life society just like every other woman who has landed the cover, even if KKTHW is business savvy and makes millions and millions each year, even if KKTHW is good looking, there is still  (or was) a bar of standards set and reserved for the coveted Vogue cover. To emphasize my point here, please consider and compare a few people who are NOT on the cover this month:

Again, I really don’t want this to come across like I am a ‘hater’ of KKTHW. I am a firm believer that in life you have to play the hand that was dealt to you the best you can. KKTHW plays her cards just like any other ‘intelligent’ person would who wants to leverage themselves and make a living the best they can. With that being said, and it seems like the majority of the internet-verse agrees, I cannot connect the dots here on how KKTHW is ‘Vogueworthy’.

If this post sabotages my chance at ever landing the cover of American Vogue, at least there’s Photoshop for now to indulge my fantasies. I’m sure at one point KKTHW thought she’d never land the cover either.

*Writer’s note: In practice, always find a way to abbreviate something. It can establish credibility on a subject that you otherwise may have zero validity in discussing. I’ve learned that nearly Everything Can Be Abbreviated (ECBA).
